Our 2022 Spring Program features a major composition work of Gabriel Fauré – Requiem in D minor, Op. 48. Now is a good time to save the dates of April 1, and April 3, 2022 for the ICS performances at the Plantation Chapel. This particular Requiem is unique in the literature for a requiem mass and is often reminiscent of the composer’s best-known work, the restful and graceful Pavane of 1887.  Fauré himself described his Requiem as “a lullaby of death.”  Fauré composed a large number of sacred works for chorus and orchestra but grandest of these is his Requiem.  The structure of Fauré’s work bears a similarity to other composers with his seven movements though different by setting Latin liturgical texts to music both in style and form from other requiems.  The seven structured movements of the composition: I. Introit et KyrieII. OffertoryIII. SanctusIV. Pie Jesu; V. Agnus DeiVI. Libera me; and VII. In Paradisum are familiar to many requiems yet Fauré closed his composition to a more serene conclusion with In Paradisum.  The composer himself in a letter to a friend viewed death “as a happy deliverance, an aspiration to happiness above rather than as a painful experience.”  The closing movement echoes some similarity to the opening, Introit et Kyrie, text “Requiem aeternam” (eternal rest) and taken from the Order of Burial, “In paradisum deducant angeli” (May angels lead you to paradise).
